Spirals, for piano, pedals, and live electronics, emerged from collaborative improvisation sessions between Ning Yu and Heather Stebbins. The movements within the work each explore spirals as both a metaphor and organizing principle, drawing from the recursive nature of musical histories and influences, everyday phenomena like the static of analog radio tuning, feedback loops, and the distortions of unconventional objects placed inside the piano.
